Summary:
Fluency is developed as students read, reread and memorize poems. Students will present poems to the class.
Main Curriculum Tie:
Language Arts - 5th Grade
Fluency-Students develop reading fluency to read aloud grade level text effortlessly without hesitation.
Materials:
Poetry books that can be read and shared by students. Or, for better use of technology, allow students to surf the internet and find a poem on their own that must then be approved by the teacher.
Background For Teachers:
Determine requirements that students will need to meet. (e.g. How often will you meet? How long will the poems be?)
Student Prior Knowledge:
Students need to have extensive listening and reading experience with a variety of poetry and songs.
Instructional Procedures:
Teacher prepares and presents a poem or song modeling expectations for students.
Students read poetry in small groups and each individual chooses a poem or song to present to the class.
Each student memorizes a song or a poem.
Each student makes a PowerPoint Slide with their poem typed up and the page decorated. While the student is reading their poem, the poem will be displayed.
5. Students will also use the internet or other sources to find out background information about the poem and the author, and put it on a slide as well.
6. Each student will take his / her turn sitting the "presenter's" chair in front of a half circle of students and present their poem or song.
Extensions:
This activity could be extended to presentations for a parent day at school.
Assessment Plan:
You may choose to create a use a rubric to assess student presentation.
